How little a role creativity plays

Reading a thread in the forums about screen names has left me shaking my head.

The internet is a place where one can be whoever they wish to be. They can try out personas, attitudes, commentary, observations; literally, or literary, there are no limits. If you wanna be a swear machine and show how a little thought can go a long way if padded out with expletives, fine. Is your life unfulfilling on a social level and forums and blogging is the place to try to hone your social skills by adding to your conversational armoury? There are many, many reasons why blogging is a healthy, fulfilling experience. Even if it is just a place to unload irational, inane, rubbish; it is probably better to do it online than corner some unfortunate in the real world, right?

Why am I shaking my head at the forum thread on screen names? Frankly, it is the complete failure to initiate even a smidgeon of imagination in the choice of some of the names! Some screen names are cleverly thought out; lights in a dark landscape. Others leave me wondering if the person behind the name is so afraid of the real world that even in cyberspace they cower in fear of what others may think of them. Yet more are simply a reflection of the lack of effort the person puts into their real life and why they find it so unfullfilling!

Agree or disagree, make your thoughts known. Remember this however: anyone who replies to this article will have their screen names judged. If you hesitate to post a reply because you are anxious about that process, maybe it's time you began to break away and realise you can be what you want to be?

Surely there are opinions to be had?

Actually, I messed up in the sign-up process. I originally wanted Stops On A Dime as my id, but am rather glad in retrospect that NickyG is my screen name here, simply because it's who I am. I don't have anything to hide here, so why bother using a different name that speaks more of my identity than I do for myself?

If I've had this nickname/screen-name since I was a kid, why would I change it?

Mine came about because of a comment made by my mother.
I keep it out of respect for her, and to remind her and myself of that funny day so many years ago.

I think people make their choice sometimes on the spur of the moment, such as when joining the site....
"Oh, hell, I need to have a name!"
And they are so eager to join up that the process of name selection takes a back seat, or is not high on the priority list.

Wreckless.

I elected a screen name for myself when I was registering my copy of Galactic Civilizations and setting up my Stardock account. It was only after a while visiting Wincustomize.com that I realized my Stardock account had already reserved this blog for me. So my screen name originated as a simple login for my Stardock account and was never intended initially for public scrutiny. Now, however, I really could not care less.

Muggaz is my real life nickname

Its a hybrid of my first and last name... If anyone who knew me saw Muggaz anywhere, they would instantly know it was me.

gothic impulse ...? Hmmmm ... let's see; you dress goth, see yourself as a dark creature-type, drifting in the meaninglessness of a pointless existence and you think the devil is cool?

Close?
